Denise Young Named Associate Vice President, Director of Brevard Campuses
By Chad Binette July 16, 2007
Denise Young has been appointed associate vice president and director of the University of Central Floridas Southern Region Campuses in Brevard County. She has held that position on an interim basis since October.
Young, of Melbourne, has worked 17 years as a UCF administrator. During her eight months in Brevard, UCF and Brevard Community College established a joint writing center and expanded the student center at the Cocoa campus.
Denise has already had an important impact on our Brevard campuses, said Dave Harrison, vice provost for UCF Regional Campuses. Her leadership has been recognized by faculty, staff and students, and the Brevard community will value her experience and statewide perspective. Shes a great listener and an energetic leader.
Young oversees UCFs Cocoa and Palm Bay campuses, where a total of about 1,600 students are enrolled. Both campuses are shared locations with Brevard Community College.
Young began working at UCF in 1990 as director of the Office of International Studies and moved to Academic Affairs three years later. As an associate vice president, she oversaw the universitys efforts related to strategic planning, program reviews, regional and discipline accreditation, international and interdisciplinary studies, and institutional research and analysis. She also teaches as a member of the Social Work faculty.
Along with President John Hitt, Young co-chaired the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation review for UCF. In January, the association renewed the universitys accreditation for 10 years.
I look forward to increasing UCFs presence in Brevard County and its role in our countys economic development by addressing the educational needs of our citizens and employers and continuing to build upon the strong foundation provided by our relationship with Brevard Community College, Young said.
Prior to coming to UCF, Young served as director of program review in Tallahassee for the Board of Regents, which oversaw higher education in the state at the time. She previously directed a multidisciplinary program in gerontology at Delta Community College in Michigan.
Young earned a Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Michigan. She received a masters degree in social work administration from Florida State University and a bachelors degree in psychology from Oakland University in Michigan.
