Orange County Mayor Richard T. Crotty and Orlando City Mayor Buddy Dyer today declared Aug. 3 White Coat Day to show their support for the University of Central Florida College of Medicine.
The first students begin classes at the med school Aug. 3. They will begin their first day by participating in a special White Coat Ceremony — a tradition that welcomes students into the medical profession as apprentices.
A coat will be presented to each student as a symbol of their promise to be a good doctor and a reminder of the commitment the community has made to bring them here and have them succeed. Each student received a first-of-its-kind scholarship that covers all costs for four years of medical school.
During the White Coat Ceremony, students will meet for the first time the donor responsible for their scholarship. The donors will give the students the white coat on stage during the ceremony.
“Our charter class has been carefully chosen,” said Dean Deborah German, M.D. “They have proven that they have both great minds needed to master the science of medicine, and big hearts necessary to care for their patients. They have also shown the capacity to become the leaders and scholars of medicine's future. Help us celebrate their arrival by wearing white on Aug. 3 to show our students that we support them and that we will all succeed together.”
The College of Medicine was built thanks to the innovative partnerships between state and local government, medical and non-medical businesses, community groups, nonprofit organizations, civic groups and individuals who not only said they wanted a medical school, but provided financial support and political will to turn the dream into a reality.
The American Association of Medical Colleges says UCF is the first U.S. medical school to provide four-year full scholarships to an entire class. The scholarships, worth $160,000 each, were made possible thanks to generous donors from throughout Central Florida.
Because the medical school belongs to the entire community, UCF invites Central Florida to wear white on the day to celebrate. The community also is encouraged to watch the ceremony live beginning at 9 a.m. on Aug. 3 at www.med.ucf.edu.
