Stroke Survivors Tell Their Stories With Photos
By UCF Staff April 29, 2009
A photography exhibition featuring works from stroke survivors attending the University of Central Florida’s Communication Disorders Clinic opens to the public Thursday, April 30.
The exhibit, titled “The Photograph as Language,” is a collaborative project between UCF and Rollins College, where the photographs will be displayed. An opening reception is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Rollins College Cornell Campus Center Darden Lounge.
The exhibit runs through May 11.
The exhibition is a culmination of several months of UCF and Rollins students working alongside the clients, who suffer from acquired language disorder aphasia, in an effort to help them communicate through cameras. The students taught clients how to remember specific events, language and life stories through photography. The stroke survivors were given cameras and encouraged to express themselves by taking photos of what was important to them.
The collaborative effort involved UCF Clinical Instructor Janet Whiteside and Dawn Roe, an assistant professor of Art at Rollins College.
The photos will be displayed at the exhibit opening, and the survivors will be in attendance to share their thoughts about the photos.
