H1N1 Update: Flu Shots, Nasal Spray Available

UCF's first shipment of the injectable H1N1 vaccine will be available to students, faculty and staff who are in the priority groups established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Those priority groups are: health care providers and emergency medical services personnel, anyone age 6 months to 24 years, pregnant women, people who live with or provide care to infants younger than 6 months, and people age 25 to 64 years who have underlying health conditions that increase risk for flu-related health complications. (Note: the order of the groups listed does not indicate priority).

About 500 shots will be available in the UCF Health Center's second-floor conference room on Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.  These doses are only a small portion of the vaccines that Health Services has requested for the UCF community.

UCF students and faculty and staff members who belong to a CDC priority group and want to receive an injectable H1N1 flu shot must pick up a voucher beforehand.

Each voucher (one per person with a valid UCF ID) will allow the bearer to come to the Health Center on Tuesday, Nov. 10, to receive his or her shot. Vouchers are available for the following one-hour time windows: 11 a.m. to noon, 1 to 2 p.m., 2 to 3 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m.

You do not need to arrive at the start time of your one-hour window. If you have a voucher for 11 a.m. to noon, for example, you may arrive at any time between 11 a.m. and noon.

Vouchers are available at the appointments/check-in window inside the Health Center's main entrance from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Vouchers also can be picked up between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday at the Knight Aide pharmacy and convenience store next to the UCF Arena.

You must bring your UCF ID to verify your eligibility for the vaccine. There is no charge for UCF students. The cost for faculty and staff is $10, which must be paid in cash or by check at the time the voucher is given. Checks should be made payable to UCF Health Services.

Accompanying each voucher will be an information sheet about the vaccine and a consent form that you must complete before you report to the Health Center to receive the vaccine. The voucher will be your ticket to receive the vaccine.

Those receiving the shots should be prepared for a short wait time, depending on when others in the same time period arrive.

NASAL SPRAY H1N1 VACCINE STILL AVAILABLE

Doses of the H1N1 nasal spray vaccine remain after UCF Health Services distributed hundreds to students, faculty and staff between Nov. 3 and
6.  The nasal spray vaccine will be available again on Thursday, Nov. 12, to UCF students, faculty and staff, whether or not they are in a CDC priority group.

Note that nasal spray is not appropriate for everyone. Those who cannot receive the nasal spray vaccine include: pregnant women, people 50 years of age and older and people with a chronic medical condition that places them at higher risk for complications from influenza. Those conditions include chronic heart or lung disease, such as asthma, and diabetes or kidney failure.

The nasal spray vaccine will be distributed in groups at the UCF Health Center on Nov. 12 at the following dates and times: 10, 10:30, 11 and 11:30 a.m.

For the nasal spray vaccine, please choose an appointment time that will allow you to arrive at the Health Center at least five minutes early, as the instructions at each session will begin on time. Anyone who arrives late will need to request a voucher for another session.

Vouchers can be obtained at the same places and during the same times listed in the flu shots section above. There is no charge for UCF students. Faculty and staff should follow the payment information in the above section.

SEASONAL FLU SHOTS STILL AVAILABLE

Students, faculty and staff are advised to get their seasonal flu shots as well. Seasonal flu shots are available by appointment at the UCF Health Center.
