UCF Hosting Workshop With Nation's Leading Turbine Researchers
By UCF Staff Oct. 26, 2009
Many of the nation’s leading turbine researchers will be at the University of Central Florida this week for a U.S. Department of Energy workshop.
The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), part of DOE’s national laboratory system, is coordinating the workshop as part of its efforts to “to protect our national and economic security by promoting a diverse supply and delivery of reliable, affordable, and environmentally sound energy.”
The three-day workshop, which begins Tuesday, Oct. 27, will feature presentations from researchers at NETL, Siemens, GE Energy, MIT, Georgia Tech and Princeton.
NETL’s choice of UCF to host the workshop is an indication of the university’s expanding influence in turbine research.
UCF and Siemens Energy dedicated the Siemens Energy Center on campus last year. Research there focuses on increasing the efficiency of power generation equipment, helping to conserve energy and reduce costs. With increased efficiency, utilities can produce more electricity using the same amount of fuel, limiting the impact on the environment and climate change. Siemens Energy’s Vinod Philip will address workshop attendees on Wednesday evening.
UCF graduate students Monica Bonadies, of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering, and Prabhakar Mohan, of the Advanced Materials Processing and Analysis Center, are scheduled to give presentations Tuesday during a workshop poster session.
