The University of Central Florida will be the first university featured in a new series of “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books on colleges and universities.

Alumni, faculty, staff, students and others are invited to submit stories about their experiences at UCF. The publishers will choose 101 stories to include in “Chicken Soup for the UCF Knights Soul,” which is scheduled to be published by fall 2008. Some of the proceeds from the book’s sales will benefit the UCF Alumni Association.

Wendy Shill Kurtz, a 1988 graduate of UCF and a former Alumni Association board member, works as a consultant for one of the co-creators of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series. She pitched the idea as a fundraiser for the Alumni Association, and creator Mark Victor Hansen heartily endorsed it.

Authors of the selected stories will be credited in the book and entered into a drawing to win a lifetime membership to the Alumni Association, currently valued at $750. They also will receive invitations to exclusive VIP events related to the book launch.

Stories should be nonfiction and range from 300 to 1,200 words. They should be exciting, funny or sad stories about something that happened to the authors or someone they know and should not deal with politics or controversial issues.

Stories can be submitted online through the UCF Alumni Web site. For more information on submission requirements or to submit a story, go to www.ucfalumni.com/chickensoup.  Story ideas and stories will be accepted until March 31.

The UCF Alumni Association can assist authors who have good ideas for stories but may need help writing them.

The UCF Alumni Association’s mission is to enhance the lives of UCF alumni, parents, students and friends by fostering mutually beneficial relationships with the university. About 157,000 alumni have graduated from UCF.

The “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series has featured more than 100 titles since the first book was published in 1993. Co-creators Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen aim to help people connect with their emotions and to empower people to live more fulfilling lives. Specialty book topics have included mothers, grandmothers, dieters and dog lovers.
